ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS AGN and starbursts at high redshift: High resolution EVN radio observations of the Hubble Deep Field. Abstract. We present deep, wide-field European VLBI Network (EVN) 1.6 GHz observations of the Hubble Deep Field (HDF) region with a resolution of 0.025 arcseconds. Above the 210 µJy/beam (5σ) detection level, the EVN clearly detects two radio sources in a field that encompasses the HDF and part of the Hubble Flanking Fields (HFF). The sources detected are: VLA J123644+621133 (a z=1.013, low-luminosity FR-I radio source located within the HDF itself) and VLA J123642+621331 (a dust enshrouded, optically faint, z=4.424 starburst system). A third radio source, J123646+621404, is detected at the 4σ level. The VLBI detections of all three sources suggest that most of the radio emission of these particular sources (including the dusty starburst) is generated by an embedded AGN.

Constraining Star Formation and AGN in z∼2 Massive Galaxies using High Resolution MERLIN Radio Observations
We present high spatial resolution MERLIN 1.4GHz radio observations of two high redshift (z∼2) sources, RGJ123623 (HDF147) and RGJ123617 (HDF130), selected as the brightest radio sources from a sample of submillimetre-faint radio galaxies. They have starburst classifications from their rest-frame UV spectra. However, their radio morphologies are remarkably compact (<80mas and <65mas respectivel...
متن کاملDistant FR I radio galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field: Implications for the cosmological evolution of radio-loud AGN
Deep and high resolution radio observations of the Hubble Deep Field and flanking fields have shown the presence of two distant edge-darkened FR I radio galaxies, allowing for the first time an estimate of their high redshift space density. If it is assumed that the space density of FR I radio galaxies at z>1 is similar to that found in the local universe, then the chance of finding two FR I ra...

A single-screen model of the gravitational lens system 2016+112 is proposed, that explains recent Hubble Space Telescope (HST) infrared (NICMOS–F160W) observations and new high-resolution European VLBI Network (EVN) 5–GHz radio observations, presented in this paper. In particular, we find that a massive 'dark' structure at the lens position, previously suggested by X-ray, optical and spectrosco...

متن کاملContinuum EVN and MERLIN observations of Ultra Luminous Infrared
Radio imaging of ULIR galaxies is ideal to explore the connection between the starburst and the AGN phenomenon since it is unaffected by dust obscuration, and provides the required high angular resolution to distinguish between an AGN and starburst emission. We have made combined 18cm radio continuum, EVN and MERLIN observations of 13 ULIRGs that have the parsec and deci-parsec scale resolution...
